Privacy

The site has no accounts, forms, ads or advertising cookies. Here is everything it keeps and sends, and how to turn off what is optional.

Google Analytics: your choice

Google Analytics shows us how people play and where visitors come from. In the European Economic Area (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), the UK and Switzerland it is off until you allow it; elsewhere it is on until you decline it. You can change your choice here at any time.

In your browser

The settings (board size, difficulty, Wrap around, Colors, theme), your records for each board and the puzzles of the day you have tried are kept in the browser’s local storage on your device. Only what the game statistics below say leaves it. Clearing the site’s data in the browser removes them. Your choice about Google Analytics above is kept there too, for a year.

Game statistics

When you play, the page sends short records of the game to our server: that a puzzle was started, solved or left, its size, difficulty and modes, the time, the time the page was on screen, the number of moves, pins and undos, the language of the page and whether the screen is a touch screen. For a puzzle of the day also its date and whether this is your first try at it. The records hold no IP address, no cookie and nothing else that identifies you or your device. They make the results of the day and the public statistics of the site; the legal basis is our legitimate interest in running and improving the game (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The address ?notrack turns them off in your browser for good.

Google Analytics

If it is on, Google Analytics (Google Ireland Limited, Google LLC) sets the cookies _ga and _ga_… for up to 2 years and receives the same game events, along with the pages you open, your approximate location (the country and the city, worked out from your IP address, which Google Analytics does not keep), your device and your browser. Google processes this data on our behalf and may transfer it to the US under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Data linked to a visitor is kept for 2 months; this setting does not apply to Google’s aggregated reports. We do not use Google Signals or Google’s advertising features. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and our legitimate interest elsewhere. Google Privacy Policy

On the server

Like any web server, ours keeps a log of requests: a shortened IP address (without its last part, so it points to a network rather than a device), the page address, the time, the page you came from, the browser and the response code. The log is kept for 14 days to protect the site from abuse and to fix errors, and is then deleted. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running the site safely (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Your rights

Under the GDPR you may ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to its processing, and complain to a data protection authority. The data in your browser stays there, and you can delete it yourself; the game statistics hold nothing that identifies you, and the server log does not keep your full IP address, so we usually cannot find your records in them.
